Villa Melnik won several awards at the Balkans International Wine Competition, June 7-8th 2014:
AplauZ Cabernet Sauvignon – Reserve 2011 received Silver Medal at the Balkans International Wine Competition 2013. Recently, it also received GOLD at SELECTIONS MONDALES DES VINS – CANADA.
AplauZ Cabernet Sauvignon – Reserve 2011 is produced from carefully selected grapes and aged in oak barrels for over a year. The color is deep, dark red. The nose is complex, with pleasant aromas of dark forest fruit – blueberries, blackberries, black pepper and vanilla. The body is balanced with soft, velvety tannins and has a long, elegant finish. This wine creates a luxurious drinking experience and has the potential to mature in the bottle for years to come.
Villa Melnik Winery was featured in the April 2014 issue of the renowned French magazine, Sommeliers.
The digital edition of the US Sommelier Journal in its August 31st, 2013 issue has published an article by Christy Canterbury, Master of Wine about Bulgaria’s wine industry revival, explicitly naming Villa Melnik as one of the “Notable Wineries” in Bulgaria.

Rumyana was born in Blagoevgrad. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry and a Master’s Degree in Oenology from Victor Segalen University in Bordeaux, France.
Rumyana has experience in the laboratory as well as with leading wine tours and tastings. She has worked as an assistant-oenologist and as an oenologist in wineries both in Bordeaux and in Bulgaria.
She is fluent in French and English.

Villa Melnik would like to present to you our master winemaker, Monsieur Didier Mailhe. Mr. Mailhe is from Toulouse region, France. He has worked for many years as an oenologist and a consultant in wineries in Bordeaux, Provence, and Burgundy. His range of knowledge pertaining to terroir (his main interest), vine growing, and the production of wine have developed into what he calls his “passion for wine”. His desire to learn more and to share his experience with others have earned him invitations to work as a consultant- oenologist all over the world: Russia, India, Great Britain, Romania, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Uruguay and more.
Mr. Mailhe has a rich academic background with a PhD in Geology and Geochemistry, a diploma (BTS) in Vine Growing and Enology, and a Master National Diploma in Enology (DNO) from ENSA, Toulouse. He has taught enology at Plumpton College, England. In addition to his native French, Mr. Mailhe speaks English, Russian, and Spanish.
Mr. Mailhe likes Bulgaria very much and believes that it has the potential to produce truly great wines. He is very interested in Bulgaria’s history and traditions. He is currently studying Bulgarian.

More than 400 wines from the Balkan region competed in the five categories: sparkling, dry white, dry rose, dry red and dessert. 23 Gold Medals were awarded (Bulgaria: 10, Greece: 7, Slovenia: 3, Macedonia: 2 and Croatia: 1) which represents 6% of all wines entered for the Competition.

Part of the team of Villa Melnik Wine Cellar visited some of the most recognized chateaus in Bordeaux, France for the week of the wine premiers – a period when of open doors when wine connoisseurs, traders and journalists visit the winemakers and taste their wines of the last vintage, before they are launched on the market.
During the same week, on April 4th, the world famous oenologist Michel Rolland marked with small party the release in book shops of his new book – “The Wine Guru”. Our team was among the guests of the occasion, congratulated the author for his book, and discussed the future of the winemaking in Bulgaria.

Dear friends, Villa Melnik Winery will be participating at the biggest exhibition of Bulgarian wines – Vinaria 2012. We shall introduce our new wines and hope to find many new friends and partners. You are welcome to visit us at the Fairground in Plovdiv from March 15th to 18th.
A Wine Festival took place in Melnik on February 11th and 12th. The wine producers of the region presented their wines. For the enjoyment of the tourists, the wine was free of charge, a concert of folk music and dances took place. The Snow – very unusual for this southern town added its beauty to the Festival.
On the 14th of February, traditionally is celebrated the Day of vine pruning and prayers for good health and rich harvest take place. The vine growers of Villa Melnik Winery honored the day on the vineyard in Harsovo, where the construction of the new modern company winery is getting momentum. The plans are to finish construction and start work this coming fall. just on time for the new harvest.
